Thursday, 12 November 2009 6.30PM

For this special screening curator and filmmaker Claus Löser will present a selection of films which were made in the GDR between 1983 and 1989 by young artists, musicians and writers. At a time when art was subject to state control artists operated outside all official channels, their subversive actions watched closely by the Stasi state security police. As in the West, the GDR had a thriving Super 8 movement which developed out of the D.I.Y. credo of punk and was able to blossom in the small pockets of independent underground culture, providing new forms of expression amid the rigidity of the political climate. Today, many artists of this GDR Super-8 underground scene – including Helge Leiberg, Via Lewandowsky, and Cornelia Schleime – have become well-known figures in the international art world.

A 70 minute programme comprising seven films.

Presented in association with Goethe-Institut Glasgow

When does destruction become an act of creation? Lawrence Pollard explores what lies behind some of the more bizarre assaults on contemporary art, including an exploding shed, an artist who destroyed every one of his possessions and art that has been both urinated on and whacked with a hammer.

The exhibition which is centered around the theme of collage and assemblage was conceived and selected by ContemporatArtETC course leader Alan Holligan after his voyage around the degree shows for Art World magazine.

In the most important times in our existence we try to make sense of our place and time by cutting up the past and re-ordering the future.

At the turn of the 20th century collage and assemblage came to the fore as a legitimate means of visual and cultural expression. The lineage of this act of creative destruction can be traced to the invention of paper in China in 200BC but it was the rise of Modernism that necessitated a technique, which took the pre-existing: the already, and tore, cut and slashed it before it was re-proposed giving rise to new understanding and meaning.

The artists who feature in CUT/PASTE have graduated during the most turbulent and uncertain of times. Nearly a full century since Picasso and Braque re-defined collage by taking the subject of the café and colliding it with the surface of the painting they are acutely aware of the contextual past & present and do not shy away or hide from it.

Alan Holligan 2009

Edinburgh Art Festival would like to invite you to Art Late, our city-wide end of Festival party. It’s the ultimate opportunity to celebrate Edinburgh’s incredible visual arts scene, and it won’t cost you a bean.

The night begins at 6pm at the Ingleby Gallery with a collaborative performance from musician Wounded Knee and dancer Ianthe Wright. Later, two contrasting tours will set out from the gallery leading people round the Festival offering different experiences of the exhibitions: The Giving Tour and the Blank Canvas Bike Tour.

The ‘Spin Tour’ will set out from Talbot Rice Gallery at 6pm and is a personal introduction to exhibitions open as part of ART LATE. There’s also a live reading by Phil Kay, printmaking demonstration, artists’ performances and an exploration of the underbelly of Edinburgh’s infamous historical episodes.

If you are feeling independent, and would rather follow your own muse, there are 18 galleries open that evening for you to explore at your leisure.

ART LATE culminates at 9.30pm with Smoke – a collaborative work by local artists to create a night of music, performance and nicotine at niteclub Electric Circus on Market Street.

It’s going to be great. You can find out all about it here:

http://www.edinburghartfestival.com/09-festival-programme/events/art-late/

Book your place and download your e-ticket. The ticket gets you entry to all Art Late venues, and without it you can’t come in!

We hope you get the chance to join us for one final night of festival fun to draw to a close the 2009 Edinburgh Art Festival.

“Occupied” is an exhibition featuring work by 3 of ContemporaryArtETC’s current students. The exhibition will feature new and recent work produced during their first year on the ground breaking course at Edinburgh’s Telford College.

The work covers a range of themes including; journey, protection and the notion of celebrity. Alongside these will be new works by the artists inspired by the current economic climate and associated difficulties of occupation, appropriation and negotiation.

Alan Holligan Curriculum Leader for the Contemporay Art Practice Course at Telford said “I am delighted that the students have shown such initiative and determination to get their work and ideas out in the public domain during their summer break. It takes a great deal of confidence and organisational skill to pull of an entirely self initiated project like this and it is testiment to the callibre of student and to their learnig over the last year.”

The art works will occupy the un-let retail space for 1 week between 18th-22nd of August at the height of the Edinburgh Festival season. The work will cover a broad range of disciplines including, drawing, painting, sculpture and film.

A private view of the work will be held on Monday the 17th August 7pm – 9pm.

Fear • verb 1 be afraid of. 2 (fear for) be anxious about. 3 archaic regard (God) with reverence and awe.

F.E.A.R. is an exhibition of prints by Neil Manning Acting Curriculum Manager of Fine Art at Edinburgh’s Telford College. This is an exhibition of 4 large scale limited edition screen prints, incorporating figurative symbolism, text and appropriated imagery and artefacts. The artworks are a personal response to recent and current personal, local, european and global events that disturbingly, on reflection, are too often more real than false.

Neil has exhibited work in gallery based shows including the R.S.A, S.S.A, Richard Demarco Gallery, 369 Gallery and Tron Theatre, since graduating in 1987 from Edinburgh College of Art. He was short listed for the McGrigor Donald Sculpture prize in 1990 exhibiting in the Kelvingrove Museum and Scottish Gallery in Edinburgh and London. The exhibitions have won critical acclaim and shocked a vocal minority with powerfully executed figurative imagery which challenge our perceptions of and highlight real and current events.

The Art World 2009 UK Degree Show round up is available now in the August / September international edition of the magazine. This years round up features 20 graduates from accross the UK including 7 artists selected from Aberdeen, Cumbria, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow & Newcastle by our very own chief contributor and Curriculum Leader Alan Holligan.

“It was a real honour to be asked to contribute once again to Art Worlds annual reveiw graduating fine art talent. The opportunity to see, consider and comment on so much work from the colleges our students aspire too provides valuable insight into current concerns of emerging artists and the various schools they are graduating from. The quality of the work was very high this year throughout all the shows I visited and I am encouraged by the high standards and breadth of practice.”

Art World magazine is available from all major stockist of Contemporay and Fine Art periodicals. Suscribe on line at:

Every year thousands of Art & Design students from hundreds of schools and FE colleges throughout the country apply for Fine Art and Design degree courses in the UK. Competitions for places is extremely high; Edinburgh College of Art for example receives more applications than Oxford and Cambridge. Successfully gaining a place on these courses is a significant achievement for any applicant.

Although such achievements are predominantly down to the hard work, dedication and creative output of the applicants themselves there can be no doubt that the influence of a highly creative, well resourced and supportive art dept along with the input of highly qualified and professional artists / lecturers can have a significant and lasting influence on the future success of students whether they choose to go on to Higher Education or directly into the Creative Industries.

The HND in Contemporary Art Practice at Edinburgh’s Telford College has a growing reputation as one of the most successful courses in the country. Our progression rates continue to be amongst the highest in the FE sector.

This year places have been offered on the following courses:

Edinburgh College of Art:

BA(hons) Intermedia

BA(hons) Painting

BA(hons) Sculpture

Glasgow School of Art:

BA(hons) Sculpture and Environmental Art

University of Cumbria:

BA(hons) Fine Art

University of Newcastle:

Deadline: Monday 25 May 2009, 5pm
Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop is seeking proposals for its annual festival exhibition, MAGAZINE, during August 2009, a part of the Edinburgh Art Festival.

MAGAZINE ‘09 is the first of a two-part project inspired by the planned development of ESW’s new international centre for contemporary sculpture. This first stage will examine notions of creative space as being formed by the relationships between individuals, objects and activities, an active participant rather than a passive container. The proposals should be a response to 1 of 3 spaces within the building (Education Space, Project Space and Pavilion 1) and should somehow alter, subvert or reinterpret the notion of creative space.
“At some point architecture becomes sculpture, and sculpture becomes architecture; at some point they meet….. For instance a wall is an element of architecture. The dimension of that wall is also an element of sculpture” (Isamu Noguchi Architectural Forum Oct. 1948 p74)

Applicants are welcome to visit ESW and view the available spaces – just phone 0131 551 4490 or e-mail admin@edinburghsculpture.org to arrange a time.

Each of the successful artists will be given sole access to one of the spaces, and successful applicants will receive a materials budget.
To Apply: Application pack available from the office next week (to include a 500 word proposal, CV, artist statement and up to 8 images).

Proposals can be sent by e-mail or post: by e-mail to: gordon@edinburghsculpture.org or by post* to Gordon Munro, Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop, 25 Hawthornvale, Newhaven, Edinburgh EH6 4JT.
* Due to limited space, postal applications can only be stored for one month. If you would like your application to be returned, please enclose a SAE or arrange for its collection.
Further Information: To register interest and receive further information, please e-mail gordon@edinburghsculpture.org or admin@edinburghsculpture.org or phone 0131 551 4490.
Applicants are welcome to visit ESW and view the available spaces – just phone 0131 551 4490 or e-mail admin@edinburghsculpture.org to arrange a time.

ContemporaryArtETC are delighted to announce the arrival of 2 new members of the staff team. Heather Craig and Jen Outhwaite.

Heather who has been a prominent of the FineArtETC team at Edinburgh’s Telford College for 5 years will replace Neil Manning as a Lecturer during his time as Acting Curriculum Manager. Heather who graduated from the Intermedia course at Edinburgh College of Art (ECA) is a practicing artist with an impressive CV including being lead singer of underground electro/punk/pop/art outfit The Gussets.

Jen is new to both the college and the course and has an equally impressive back ground, graduating in 2008 form the Sculpture School at ECA. Jen joins us as our very 1st Learning Assistant.

Some of our regular readers might remember that both Heather and Jen have featured on this site before as both have joined us on separate trips to Germany. Jen joined us in Muster and Kassel in the summer of 2007 and Heather helped maintain order at 5th Berlin Biennale.

Jen and Heather will bring new perspectives, thinking, skills, vibrancy and enthusiasm to the team and we are very much looking forward to working with them.
